While visiting Delray Beach we certainly suggest a visit to the beach.  Delray Beach boasts over two miles of wide sandy beach for all to enjoy.  Delray Beach is one of only a few Cities where the main downtown street ends right at the ocean!  Whether interested is relaxing in the sun, participating in the many water sports available or walking the area, you are sure to enjoy!

Blue Waves Beach Award

The Blue Wave Award is given by the Clean Beaches Council, a not-for-profit organization devoted to increasing public awareness and volunteer participation in beach sustainability.

Beaches are rated on their water quality, cleanliness, safety, services and maintenance, conservation efforts, warning and information systems and management of erosion.



Delray Municipal Beach and Atlantic Dunes Park are lifeguard supervised from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, 365 days per year


Ocean Rescue

The Ocean Rescue Division is located at 340 South Ocean Blvd. (A1A), (561) 243-7352 and directed by the Parks and Recreation Department in supervising public safety at the Municipal Beach and Atlantic Dunes Park.

The lifeguard staff is continuously training to maintain and develop their ocean rescue and basic life support skills. This is part of an ongoing certification process to insure their proficiency. Ocean Rescue Officers are licensed Emergency Medical Technicians. The entire staff has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and service receiving numerous awards for their professional achievement from the USLA, the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association, and the Emergency Medicine Foundation.


Ocean Safety

Ocean Safety Awareness Classes are scheduled upon request at your location or the Ocean Rescue Headquarters. The class covers ocean safety information about rip currents, man-o-war jellyfish, lightning / severe weather, marine life, and  other beach related topics.

Surf Chairs

Two Surf Chairs are available for the physically challenged to enjoy the beach.  The chairs allow for mobility on the sand and are available from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at the following lifeguard towers: South 1, located at A1A and Atlantic Avenue and Atlantic Dunes Park, located on A1A just one block north of Linton Blvd.

The use of the surf chair is free of charge but there is a two (2) hour time limitation.  Use of the chair is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and be accompanied by a companion who is able to assist the user.


Beach Warning Flag Meanings

GREEN FLAG – Low Hazard: Conditions are calm; normal care and caution should be exercised.
YELLOW FLAG – Moderately Hazardous Conditions: Moderate currents and/or surf are present; use extra care.
RED FLAG – Very Hazardous Conditions: Rough surf and/or strong currents exist; swimmers are strongly discouraged from entering the water.
DOUBLE-RED FLAG – Closed to the Public: The water and/or beach are closed to the public due to severe currents and/or surf, water pollution, the threat of lightning, or the presence of predatory fish.
PURPLE FLAG – Marine Pests: Jellyfish, man-of-wars, and/or sea lice are present. This flag may be flown along with any of the other flags.


Beach Parks / Parking

The Municipal Beach has five parks with parking areas for automobiles in addition to parallel parking along Ocean Blvd.  Sarah Gleason Park is named for a visionary local landowner, who in 1871, sold the land along the ocean with deed restrictions identifying what is now the municipal beach. Sandoway Park and the Ingraham residents parking lot, Anchor Park, and municipal parking just north of Atlantic Ave. adjacent to the Marriott Hotel provide 400 parking spaces. The Ocean Rescue Division Headquarters is also located in Anchor Park.  Atlantic Dunes Park provides an additional 114 parking spaces for beach-goers.  Reasonably priced Beach Parking Permits are available that cover a one year period from October 1 through September 30.


Anchor Park

Located at 340 S. Ocean Boulevard, Anchor Park is the home of the Ocean Rescue Division Headquarters. Metered parking, public restrooms, playground, outside showers, and picnic tables with barbecue grills are available to the public.  Anchor Park is opened 8:00AM to Dusk.


Atlantic Dunes Park

Atlantic Dunes Park is located at 1605 S. Ocean Boulevard and is lifeguard supervised by the Ocean Rescue Division. There is a boardwalk and nature trail in addition to metered parking, a pavilion, public restrooms and picnic tables. Lifeguards are on duty from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This Park suits those who want more of a serene beach experience. The park is nestled in an elevated wooded area on the beach side of A-1-A one block north of Linton Blvd. Handicapped parking is available next to the park, which has an accessible covered pavilion and restrooms.


Sandoway Park

Sandoway Park is located directly across from the municipal beach. It consists of metered parking, newly renovated restrooms, drinking fountain, and vending machine.  Park hours are 8:00 AM to Dusk.


Sarah Gleason Park

Located at 2 South Ocean Boulevard, Sarah Gleason Park is a passive park with public restrooms and drinking fountain.  Sarah Gleason Park is named for a visionary local landowner, who in 1871, sold the land along the ocean with deed restrictions identifying what is now the municipal beach.

Constructed wetlands, with an elevated boardwalk, that provides approximately 50 acres of freshwater marsh habitat for wetland birding. Fine views of purple gallinule, sora, least bittern, limpkin, and black-bellied whistling-ducks.

Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

The Refuge is a regional hub for birding, known as a “Gateway” viewing spot, for its more extensive trail-related resources and loaner optics available on-site. Terrific viewing throughout the Refuge for yellow-breasted chats, painted buntings, common yellowthroats, limpkin, waterfowl,  American bittern, and blue-and-green-winged teal.
